Use case · ADUs

How planning departments
handle ADU questions.

Accessory dwelling units bring some of the most detailed questions a counter gets, and the answer often depends on several layers of rules at once.

What residents ask

The questions that come in.

  • Can I build an ADU behind my house?
  • How big can a detached ADU be?
  • Do I need to add parking?
  • Can I convert my garage?
  • What setbacks apply to an ADU?
What goes into an answer

Every rule that applies,
in one answer.

ADU rules are layered, and they change often. The code sets size limits, setbacks, height and design standards, and each can vary by district.

The right answer also depends on the lot: its district, its size, whether it is near transit, and whether an overlay applies. A general answer is easy to give and often wrong for the property in question.

The answer pulls together the ADU standards that apply, and cites each one.

BUBurbank, CaliforniaADU
"Can I build an ADU behind my house?"
Yes — a detached ADU is capped at 850 sq ft (one bedroom) with a 4-ft rear and side setback. ADUs are also exempt from the usual FAR, lot-coverage and open-space limits, and no extra parking is required when the lot is near transit.
